Roof Insulation

Roof insulation is a thermal insulation system in which rigid insulation materials are installed as part of the roof assembly to reduce heat transfer between the exterior environment and the building interior. Since roofs are one of the largest exposed building elements, uncontrolled heat gain through roof structures can significantly increase indoor temperatures and cooling energy demand.

By introducing a continuous thermal resistance layer, roof insulation limits conductive and radiant heat flow, stabilizes internal surface temperatures, and improves overall building energy performance. Properly designed roof insulation systems contribute to occupant comfort, energy efficiency, and long-term durability of the roofing assembly.

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) and Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) insulation materials are widely used for roof insulation due to their good thermal performance, lightweight nature, dimensional stability, and availability in different strength grades.

In a typical roof insulation system, EPS or XPS boards are installed:

• • Above the waterproofing membrane (inverted roof system), or
  • Above the structural roof slab and below waterproofing layers (warm roof system), or
  • Below the structural slab or within composite roof assemblies (depending on design)
